Why the Hammerhead?
At Island Spirit, our spirit animal is the Hammerhead shark – and no, it’s not just because they look cool (though… they really do).
Here’s why we love them:
✨ Unique: With their one-of-a-kind shape, hammerheads see the world differently — just like us, and the amazing people we work with.
💪 Strong: They’re powerful and resilient, gliding through challenges with ease.
🌊 Beyond the Ordinary: Hammerheads don’t just blend in — they stand out. That’s what we’re all about too: celebrating extraordinary lives lived on your own terms.
So when you see our hammerhead, think of it as a reminder to embrace your uniqueness, swim your own path, and live beyond the ordinary.

Laura Brind
Founder
With over 20 years in teaching—and 15 of those spent supporting young people with special needs and disabilities—I’ve made it my mission to help every learner shine. For the past 7 years, I’ve been lucky enough to call Grand Cayman home, teaching by day and diving into the ocean (literally!) by weekend.
Before island life, I trained as a Gestalt counsellor and volunteered with Mind and the Samaritans in London, championing mental health and running mindfulness photography classes. These days, my therapy is underwater—exploring coral reefs—or on land, camera in hand, capturing curious lizards. If I’m not doing either, I’m probably being bossed around by my two tiny (but mighty) chihuahuas.

With 29 years of teaching under my belt—21 spent in the buzz of London classrooms and the last 8 soaking up the sunshine in the Cayman Islands—I’ve loved every minute of inspiring young minds through learning and movement. As a Physical Education specialist, I get to share my passion for all things active, helping students discover the joy of staying fit, confident, and full of energy.
When I’m not in the gym or on the field, you’ll probably find me dancing, acting, or baking up a storm! I’ve performed in countless shows across the Island, and I love bringing that same creativity and expression into my teaching. Baking is my kind of therapy—part science, part art, and always a chance to think (and taste!) outside the box.
I also lead emotional literacy initiatives, championing the importance of wellbeing, empathy, and self-expression in every child’s journey.
